DETAILS: Join the High Knob Chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalists for an evening in Flag Rock Recreation Area. Learn about the natural world on High Knob with a variety of programs. All programs are free. No pre-registration is required.

SCHEDULE:

  • 6-6:30 PM: Welcome and Registration at the Shelter Trailhead in Flag Rock Recreation Area. See above Google Maps link for driving directions.
     

  • 6:30-7:30 PM

    • Plant Press Workshop: Learn how to do a plant pressing.
      ​

    • Insects: Learn about the diversity of insects that call the High Knob Region home.
       

    • Mycoblitz Part 1: Participate in a survey of the fungal species present in Flag Rock Recreation Area. This session will focus on gathering specimens. 
       

    • Kids Hike: Explore Flag Rock's resident plants, animals, mushrooms and more on this introduction to hiking.
       

  • 7:30-8:30 PM

    • ​Plant Press Workshop: Learn how to do a plant pressing.
      ​

    • amphibians & reptiles: Learn about the diversity of amphibians and reptiles that call the High Knob Region home.
       

    • Mycoblitz Part 2: Participate in a survey of the fungal species present in Flag Rock Recreation Area. This session will focus on documentation and research. 
       

    • Kids Hike: Explore Flag Rock's resident plants, animals, mushrooms and more on this introduction to hiking.
       

  • 8:30-9 PM

    • Flag Rock Sunset: Soak up the sunset from Norton's famous lookout.
