storytelling workshop & performance

GENERAL INFO: Join Pro-Art and the High Knob Outdoor Fest for a storytelling event at the High Knob Destination Center! A FREE storytelling workshop will be held followed by a performance featuring two professional storytellers.
COST: Free. Registration is required for the Storytelling Workshop.

WORKSHOP DETAILS: Led by Kelle Jolly, the 2nd annual Fireside Storytelling workshop explores the lives and music of three influential Appalachian blues women—Bessie Smith, Ida Cox, and Leola Manning—who used their voices to document the struggles, joys, and realities of life in the early 20th century. Their songs, much like photographs, capture snapshots of life, from the hardships of the Great Depression to personal struggles, natural disasters, and resilience. Through their lyrics and musical styles, they exemplify the blues tradition, blending honest emotion with storytelling. Participants will compose original blues songs with lyrics that tell a story. This workshop is for all ages, beginner and advanced storytellers.
LIVE PERFORMANCE DETAILS: Kelle Jolly and Hannah Harvey will give storytelling performances in conjunction with High Knob Outdoor Festival.
Hannah Harvey takes us from the worlds of folktales and magic, to the realm of everyday Appalachian life, in an evening of tales full of humor and heart. Hear nearby stories from Saltville, VA, and folktales far-flung from across the pond—these tales transport us to another world, so that we might come back ready to inhabit our own homeplaces with even more compassion, curiosity, and wonder.
Kelle Jolly is a multifaceted musician, renowned for her exceptional talents as a ukulele player, vocalist, and storyteller. With a Master of Art in Communication and Storytelling Studies from East Tennessee State University, and a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from South Carolina State University, Kelle combines her academic background with a wealth of practical experience to captivate audiences worldwide.
